Abstract

A brief summary of the article

It’s been a little while since my last update and there’s been a few changes in my life. New job and new part of the country, no new home yet though.

Content

Main article body

Since my last article I’ve started my first proper job (ever). I’ve just completed my first weeks work as a web developer for a magazine/comic publishing firm in London. I’m not sure how much detail I should give but let’s just say that some of the stuff this company is involved with is geek heaven.

So far the biggest challenge has been learning the technologies whilst having to work hard to meet a major deadline that’s just a week from now. It’s tough balancing the benefits of learning and using new technologies versus using what’s already there, especially when there’s so little time. But it’s a fun challenge, the working environment is great and the projects are genuinely interesting. It seems like I’m going to enjoy this job a lot.

The only real problem right now is that I’m still homeless. It’s unbelievable how much competition there is for every houseshare advert in London, hundreds go up every day and each of them gets a few dozen responses. Trying to convince people that you’re the kind of person they want to live with is harder than any job interview, especially when you literally only have a few minutes to get to know them.

Other than that, I’ve had a few web-related ideas I wish to explore and hopefully I’ll be able to say more once I have my proper computer back.

Well done on making the leap down here, I’ve been working in London for a year and a half now and am loving it! I know what you mean regarding the housing situation… to get my current digs I basically kept a few of the more popular sites in a firefox tab and checked them every 15 mins.. it really does move that fast. I recommend moveflat.com for decent places, although I found mine through gumtree. I remember one situation where I got through to a shortlist of potential housemates, only to find that we were being interviewed at the same time! It was a little weird to say the least. Anyway good work on the job and I’m glad you’re liking it as much as me, nice blog as well, subscribed.

Gavin, thanks. Hopefully I’ll be settled soon and able to write some more proper content, I’ve got a few ideas but it’s tough thinking things out properly when I’m not in my proper thinking space.

Andy, I’ve just taken a look at moveflat and it seems cool. Mostly I’ve been looking at Gumtree because that seems to be what everyone recommends, but it’s hard to narrow things down to what I’m looking for. Moveflat doesn’t have as many results but allows me to limit things to what I’m looking for, so thanks a lot for the link.

I’m interested in attending the WSG London meetups, looks like I just missed the last one.

Hey Andy, Just wanted to say good luck finding a flat! Remember to invite us all down for a brewski and whatnot when you find somewhere (we promise not to trash it)

    Mat
